New Delhi, December 27, 2024: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, expressed profound grief over the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. A condolence resolution was unanimously adopted, and a two-minute silence was observed in his honor.
As a mark of respect, the Government has declared a seven-day state mourning period until January 1, 2025. During this period, the National Flag will fly at half-mast across Bharat and in all Indian Missions and High Commissions abroad. Dr. Manmohan Singh will be accorded a State Funeral, and a half-day holiday will be observed in all Central Government offices and CPSUs on the day of the funeral.
Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah village (now in Pakistan), Dr. Manmohan Singh had an illustrious academic journey. He earned his Master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University in 1954, followed by a Tripos in Economics from the University of Cambridge in 1957 with First Class Honours. In 1962, he received a D.Phil from the University of Oxford.
Dr. Singh began his academic career as a Senior Lecturer at Panjab University and later served as Professor of International Trade at Delhi School of Economics. Over his remarkable career, he held pivotal roles, including Chief Economic Adviser, Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, Member Secretary of the Planning Commission, and Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
He was honored with prestigious awards, including the Padma Vibhushan (1987), Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award (1995), and the Adam Smith Prize (1956).
Dr. Manmohan Singh served as India’s Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, playing a critical role in implementing transformative economic reforms. He served two consecutive terms as Prime Minister from May 2004 to May 2014, leaving an indelible mark on India’s economic and political landscape.
In its resolution, the Cabinet stated, “Dr. Manmohan Singh has left an enduring legacy as a statesman, economist, and visionary leader. The nation mourns the loss of an extraordinary figure who dedicated his life to public service.”
The Government and the nation extend their deepest condolences to Dr. Singh’s family during this time of immense grief.
