DoT Enhances Telecom Infrastructure for Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), in collaboration with leading Telecom Service Providers, is making extensive preparations to ensure seamless communication services during the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj. With millions of devotees and visitors expected, significant infrastructure upgrades and advanced technologies are being deployed to meet the communication demands of this world’s largest religious gathering.


Telecom Infrastructure Expansion Across Prayagraj

Prayagraj City Area:

  • 126 km of optical fibre cable (OFC) laid for enhanced connectivity.
  • 328 new telecom towers/masts installed.
  • 575 new BTS (Base Transceiver Stations) deployed across all mobile technologies.
  • 1,462 BTS units upgraded for uninterrupted connectivity.

Mela Area:

  • 192 km of OFC deployed for high-speed, reliable connectivity.
  • 78 CoWs (Transportable Towers) installed for temporary high-capacity coverage.
  • 150 outdoor Small Cell solutions for crowded zones.
  • 352 new BTS units deployed.
  • 50 BTS units upgraded for improved performance.

Telecom Optimization in Public Spaces and Highways

Key public hubs like railway stations, bus terminals, airports, and highways have been optimized for continuous connectivity. Special attention has been given to the Green Corridor, a vital route for smooth traffic flow during the Mela.


Citizen-Centric Telecom Services

  • 53 telecom help desks set up across the Mela grounds.
  • Services include reporting fraud communications and blocking lost or stolen mobiles.
  • Electromagnetic Radiation Testing ensures telecom towers comply with safety standards.
  • Cell Broadcast Alert Facility and Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) for real-time emergency alerts, disaster warnings, and public awareness messages.

Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness

  • Three disaster management centres set up in the Mela area.
  • Operated by leading telecom providers (Airtel, BSNL, Jio, Vi).
  • Equipped with advanced communication systems for emergency response and disaster management.

Enhancing Digital Experiences for Devotees

From mobile-based payments to live streaming of rituals, the upgraded telecom network will support a digital-first experience for devotees.
