Metro: India Achieves 3rd Largest Network Globally with 1,000 km Coverage

Metro systems have revolutionized urban travel in India, covering over 1,000 km across 11 states and 23 cities. Millions rely on these systems for quick, affordable, and reliable transportation, making India home to the third-largest metro network globally. More than just transit systems, metros are reshaping how cities operate and grow.

A Future of Fast, Safe, and Reliable Travel

On January 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for multiple metro projects worth over ₹12,200 crore in Delhi. These included:

  • 13 km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor: Enhancing travel between Delhi and Meerut.
  • 2.8 km Delhi Metro Phase-IV: Improving connectivity in West Delhi.
  • 26.5 km Rithala-Kundli Corridor: Strengthening Delhi-Haryana links.

These projects will significantly increase metro capacity, serving over 1 crore passengers daily. Notably, India surpassed Japan in metro rail expansion in 2022 and is now the third-largest operational metro network globally, with ambitions to become the second-largest.

Milestones in India’s Metro History

India’s metro journey began with the Metropolitan Transport Project in 1969. However, it took nearly two decades for the Kolkata Metro to become operational, marking the start of modern urban mobility.

Advancements in Metro Systems

India’s metro projects have set global standards with groundbreaking innovations:

  • Under-Water Metro: India’s first underwater metro tunnel under the Hooghly River in Kolkata showcases engineering excellence.
  • Driverless Metro: Launched in 2020 on Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line, this marks a leap in automation.
  • Kochi Water Metro: Connecting 10 islands with electric hybrid boats, this project ensures seamless water transit.

Additionally, three metro expansions were recently approved:

  • Bengaluru Metro: 44 km across two corridors.
  • Thane Metro: 29 km to reduce road congestion.
  • Pune Metro: 5.5 km route for better connectivity.

Global Collaboration

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is leading international projects in Bangladesh and providing consultancy in Jakarta. Discussions are ongoing with countries like Israel, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, and El Salvador.

Conclusion

From the first metro in Kolkata to innovations like underwater tunnels and driverless technology, India’s metro network has grown exponentially. As projects continue to expand, India sets new benchmarks for urban mobility, contributing to sustainable and connected cities.
