Over 1200 Candidates Set to Compete in Phase 2 of Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Across 13 States/UTs
As the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 progress into their second phase, the Election Commission has announced a formidable lineup of contenders across 13 States/Union Territories (UTs). A total of 1210 candidates are gearing up to battle it out for parliamentary seats in this crucial phase of the electoral process.
With 2633 nomination forms submitted for 88 Parliamentary Constituencies (PCs) spanning 12 States/UTs, the stakes are undeniably high. The deadline for filing nominations closed on April 4, 2024, ushering in a rigorous scrutiny process. Following this scrutiny, 1428 nominations were deemed valid, setting the stage for the final contest.
Among the highlights of Phase 2, Kerala leads with a staggering 500 nominations spread across 20 PCs, closely trailed by Karnataka with 491 nominations across 14 PCs. In contrast, Tripura witnessed a minimal turnout with only 14 nominations for a single PC.
A closer look at the State/UT-wise breakdown reveals a diverse landscape of participation. From Assam to West Bengal, candidates are vying for seats in a range of PCs, with varying numbers of nominations, valid candidatures, and final contestants.
It’s worth noting that Outer Manipur PC presents a unique scenario, with 15 Assembly Constituencies (ACs) slated for polls on April 19, 2024 (Phase 1), followed by 13 ACs on April 26, 2024 (Phase 2). A total of four candidates from Outer Manipur PC are in the fray, as per the Gazette notification issued on April 5, 2024.
Reflecting on Phase 1, a total of 1625 candidates contested across 21 States/UTs, marking a significant engagement in the electoral process, with representation from both male and female candidates.
