Bengaluru, December 28, 2024: Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Union Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, chaired a high-level meeting on December 27, 2024, at the Central Institute of Coastal Engineering for Fishery (CICEF), Bengaluru. The meeting reviewed the progress of Smart and Integrated Fishing Harbour projects in Jakhau (Gujarat), Karaikal (Puducherry), and Vanakbara (Daman & Diu), along with ongoing activities of CICEF.
The meeting was attended by Shri Sagar Mehra, Joint Secretary, Government of India, Mr. Konda Reddy Chavva, FAO Representative to India, and senior officials from the Department of Fisheries and Maritime States, with several participants joining virtually.
Focus on Smart and Integrated Fishing Harbours
The review emphasized the strategic importance of modernizing India’s fishery infrastructure to enhance sustainability, productivity, and economic viability. Key aspects discussed included:
- Digital Infrastructure: Integration of real-time data monitoring, automated fish handling systems, and digital marketplaces.
- Sustainability Measures: Adoption of green energy solutions, waste management systems, and eco-friendly construction practices.
- Integrated Facilities: Provision of cold storage, ice plants, quality control labs, and modern auction platforms.
- Community Development: Training and capacity-building programs for fishermen to ensure equitable growth and employment opportunities.
PMMSY and Smart Harbour Projects
Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the Ministry has sanctioned projects worth ₹3,184.28 crore for the construction, modernization, and maintenance of 58 Fishing Harbours (FHs) and Fish Landing Centres (FLCs), including the three Smart and Integrated Harbours at Jakhau, Karaikal, and Vanakbara.
FAO Collaboration for Blue Ports
Shri Sagar Mehra highlighted the Department of Fisheries’ agreement with FAO’s Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) for strengthening Blue Ports in India. Mr. Konda Reddy Chavva emphasized that the three pilot fishing ports will gain strategic tools and operational guidance to address sector-specific challenges.
State-Level Progress and Presentations
Officials from Gujarat, Puducherry, and Daman & Diu provided detailed updates on the development progress of the Smart Fishing Harbours. These projects aim to serve as models for sustainable and efficient maritime operations.
Role of CICEF
Shri N. Venkatesh Prasad, Director of CICEF, presented an overview of ongoing projects, including site selection, feasibility studies, and engineering investigations. The Union Secretary urged CICEF to accelerate its initiatives and collaborate with state governments and other stakeholders to ensure timely project execution.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to transform India’s fishery sector through smart infrastructure, innovative technology, and sustainable practices, aiming to boost livelihoods and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.
