Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi Assumes Role as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff

Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, AVSM, NM, officially assumed the position of Vice Chief of the Naval Staff on January 4, 2024. Commencing his new role, the esteemed Flag Officer paid homage to fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation, placing a floral wreath at the National War Memorial. Prior to this appointment, Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command.

An alumnus of Sainik School Rewa and the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Vice Admiral Tripathi was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1985. As a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare, he served in various capacities on frontline warships, including roles as Signal Communication Officer, Electronic Warfare Officer, Executive Officer, and Principal Warfare Officer of Guided Missile Destroyer INS Mumbai. His distinguished career also includes commanding Indian Naval Ships Vinash, Kirch, and Trishul.

Vice Admiral Tripathi held critical operational and staff appointments, such as Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet at Mumbai, Director of Naval Operations, Principal Director Network Centric Operations, and Principal Director Naval Plans at New Delhi. His promotions led him to roles such as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans), Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, and Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala, Kerala.

A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Vice Admiral Tripathi received the Thimmaiya Medal. He also attended the Naval Higher Command Course and Naval Command College at the US Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Islands, winning the prestigious Robert E Bateman International Prize in 2007-08.

Vice Admiral Tripathi, a recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Nausena Medal, has showcased devotion to duty throughout his illustrious career. Beyond his military achievements, he is a passionate sports enthusiast, avidly following tennis, badminton, and cricket. Additionally, he is well-versed in international relations, military history, and the art & science of leadership.

Married to Mrs. Shashi Tripathi, an artist and homemaker, Vice Admiral Tripathi and his wife have one son, a practicing lawyer, married to Tanya, who works in the policy-making domain.
