Uttar Purvi Mahotsav 2024: A Spectacle of Northeastern Splendor Unveiled in Delhi from January 13-17

New Delhi, January 4, 2024: The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, through its CPSE, North Eastern Handicrafts & Handlooms Development Corporation Limited (NEHHDC), is set to host the inaugural edition of “Uttar Purvi Mahotsav 2024” – a cultural extravaganza showcasing the rich diversity of Northeast India. The five-day event will be held at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, from January 13 to 17, 2024.

Cultural Mosaic and Economic Opportunities: Secretary Chanchal Kumar briefed the media, emphasizing that the Mahotsav is meticulously curated to blend traditional arts, crafts, and cultures of Northeast India under one vibrant umbrella. More than a celebration, the Mahotsav serves as a platform for economic opportunities, fostering exchanges in traditional handicrafts, handlooms, agro products, and tourism offerings. The festival aims to become a catalyst for the region’s growth and development.

Event Highlights:

  1. Handicrafts, Handlooms, and Agri-Horti Produce Showcase:
    • 250 weavers, farmers, and entrepreneurs participating.
    • Exhibition of handcrafted products, textiles, sustainable handicrafts, and GI products.
  2. Panel Discussions:
    • “Towards Prosperity: Catalysing North East’s Progress Towards a Viksit Bharat.”
    • “Women Leaders in the Northeast.”
    • “Northeast in Action: Youth, Workforce, and the Economic Tapestry of India.”
  3. Buyer-Seller Meets:
    • Conducive platform for interactions across handlooms, handicrafts, agro products, and tourism.
    • Aiming to onboard 5,000 – 10,000 artisans annually.
  4. Cultural Showcase:
    • Traditional dances, mesmerizing performances, and cultural heritage showcase.
    • Fashion Show on January 14th, Tangtha Fight, Lion Dance, and more on subsequent days.
    • Finale on January 17th featuring rock band Bottle Rockets India and singer-violinist Sunita Bhuyan.

Inauguration and Foundation Laying:

  • Barak Hostel at JNU inaugurated during the Mahotsav, accommodating 400 students from NER.
  • Foundation stone for a North East Convention Centre laid at Dwarka, New Delhi.
