Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Cases Detected in Karnataka: ICMR Assures No Unusual Surge

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has detected two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka through routine surveillance aimed at monitoring respiratory illnesses. Both cases were identified as part of ICMR’s ongoing nationwide surveillance efforts.

HMPV is a globally circulating respiratory virus, and its presence in India is not unusual. According to data from ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), there is currently no significant surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in the country.

Details of the Cases:

  1. A 3-month-old female infant diagnosed with HMPV at Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru, after presenting with bronchopneumonia. The infant has been discharged and is stable.
  2. An 8-month-old male infant tested positive for HMPV on January 3, 2025, after being admitted to Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru, with bronchopneumonia. The child is currently recovering.

Neither of the affected infants have any history of international travel.

The Union Health Ministry, in coordination with ICMR, is closely monitoring the situation. Surveillance networks remain active, and regular updates from the World Health Organization (WHO) are being followed.

India recently conducted a national preparedness drill to handle potential increases in respiratory illnesses. The results indicated robust preparedness and the ability to deploy public health interventions promptly if required.

The ICMR assures continued vigilance and tracking of HMPV trends across the country to ensure public health safety.
