Mines Ministry Hosts Roadshow in Kochi to Launch Offshore Mineral Blocks Auction

Kochi, Kerala: In a landmark initiative, the Ministry of Mines hosted a roadshow today at The Renai, Kochi, to promote the maiden e-auction of offshore mineral blocks. This event marks a pivotal step in India’s efforts to harness the vast resource potential within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

In his welcome address, Shri Vivek Kr. Bajpai, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Mines, emphasized the transformative nature of India’s first offshore mineral block auction. He spotlighted the potential of key resources such as construction sand, lime-mud, and polymetallic nodules, which are essential for achieving self-reliance in critical minerals.

Shri V.L. Kantha Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Mines, expressed optimism about India’s emerging leadership in offshore mining. He noted, “India is on the path to becoming a global leader in offshore mineral exploration. These abundant resources will cater to domestic demand while positioning India as a major player on the global mining stage.” He also highlighted the auction’s transparent and competitive process as a means to attract investments, encourage innovation, and drive sustainable economic growth.

Shri A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, Principal Secretary of the Industries Department, Government of Kerala, underscored Kerala’s strategic importance in the offshore mining sector. Highlighting the state’s vast deposits of construction sand, he reiterated Kerala’s commitment to fostering investor-friendly and sustainable mining practices.

  • SBICAPS: Provided detailed insights into the e-auction process, including registration steps, timelines, and participation requirements.
  • Geological Survey of India (GSI): Presented findings on the immense potential of construction sand deposits off Kerala’s coast and other offshore mineral resources.
  • MSTC: Conducted a live demonstration of the advanced e-auction platform, showcasing its transparency and seamless user experience.
